t’s a destination almost as iconic as the World’s Largest Cowboys Boots that proudly stand in front of it at our North Star Mall.

Saks Fifth Avenue (), home to Prada, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Jimmy Choo and many more fabulous brands, has welcomed countless fashion lovers and our credit cards, providing a sense of sparkle and flair for everyone who walks through the doors.

For my mom, my sisters and me, a visit to Saks was always been a special treat. The shoes! The jewels! The bags! The cosmetics! The clothes! Our biggest decision: Where should we start looking? And while we purchased only every now and again, just the experience of browsing the racks and display cases transported us to another world.

As you probably know, due to financial troubles (maybe we should have purchased more often), Saks is shutting its doors in May. I’m terribly sad to see it go. My credit card? Not so much.

In honor of our city’s 300th Anniversary, I’m ranking Saks Fifth Avenue No. 127 in my 300 Reasons to Love San Antonio list. Thank you, Saks, for making us all feel special. Our closets will miss you.

Our influx of new San Antonians continues to blossom, boosting us from 7th to 6th largest city in the United States! A new ranking by World Population Review shows:

1. New York, with 8 million people
2. Los Angeles, with close to 4 million
3. Chicago, with 2.7 million
4. Houston, with 2.4 million
5. Phoenix, with 1.7 million
6. San Antonio, with 1.57 million

What does this mean for us? While our home sales are down, our median price and price per square foot are up. It’s still a great market, whether you’re a buyer or seller.

How about our amazing San Antonio Zoo? In December, San Antonio Zoo unveiled Congo Falls, a two-acre immersive realm featuring three habitats, lush landscaping, dynamic water features and the stunning Mays Family Silverback Peak — the tallest gorilla tower in the world at over 70 feet.

Congo Falls is now home to a thriving gorrilla family. Ajari (pictured above), a 25-year-old male western lowland gorilla arriving from the Houston Zoo, is the leader of the pack. His arrival marks a historic milestone in our Zoo’s 111-year history and supports the global mission to advance gorilla conservation and long-term species survival.

Ajari’s gal pals include:

• Andi, the smallest of the bunch! She’s often seen following Ajari everywhere he goes.

• Anaka, the total fashion queen. The hair on her shoulders is tufted, giving her the look of built-in shoulder pads!

• Merry, the protector of the group, always keeping an eye on everyone. She just might be Ajari’s favorite!

Based on various reports and predictions, we’re seeing San Antonio’s housing market transitioning to a more balanced state, shifting towards a buyer market with increased inventory, slower price growth (even slight drops) and more buyer negotiation power. Our population is still growing like crazy, so the market remains strong for sellers – especially if you’ve got a great location and just the right price.

Is a new home in San Antonio on your Christmas wish list? If so, you’re in luck! Our inventory rate (5.9 months’ worth) is at its highest level in years, and interest rates are down a quarter percent. So if you’re looking, or you know folks who are, we have plenty to see!

This comes as good new news because our November home sales were definitely down – by 19%, in fact. Our average price has backed off to $374,831, but our median price is up a bit to $315,000.

Our price per square foot remains steady at $173, with the majority of home selling at their list price. Pricing, condition and strategy matter more than ever. We must make sure our selling price is spot on in order to secure the right buyer as quickly as possible.

Guess who’s coming for Christmas! My grandson Nicky will be celebrating the holiday here in San Antonio. I can’t wait for him – and his parents Hobie and Nora – to join Matthew and me during this very special family time.
