Capistrano Beach, located in the city of Dana Point, California, has a rich history dating back to the mid-1800s. The area was initially part of Rancho Boca de la Playa, which was granted to Don Emigdio Vejar. In 1860, the land was sold to Juan Abila, who later sold a strip of it to the San Bernardino and San Diego Railway. The railway collaborated with the California Central Railway to build a rail line between Los Angeles and San Diego, with a station at Capistrano. Initially named San Juan by the Sea, the station was later changed to Serra, after the newly formed school district in 1910.

Development of Capistrano Beach began in 1925, with the construction of residential homes on the bluff. The Capistrano Beach Club was built along the shore of the new development, and the area became a popular spot for strolling, sightseeing, and fishing. The Petroleum Securities Company, owned by Edward L. Doheny, became the new owners of the Capistrano Beach development in 1929. However, the Great Depression halted further development until the 1940s.

During excavation in 1929, the bones of a mastodon (or possibly a mammoth) were discovered and taken to the Los Angeles National History Hall for display. The 1,180 feet (360 m) wooden pier was another popular attraction until it was severely damaged by waves in 1964, leading to its condemnation and demolition in 1965. The Capistrano Beach Club became rundown and was eventually dismantled in the late 1960s.

In 1931, following the death of Doheny's son, he donated over 40 acres (16 ha) to the state for Doheny State Beach, which included part of Capistrano Beach. The area became part of the city of Dana Point in 1989.

However, the beach has faced challenges over the years, particularly during storms. In 2018, a boardwalk collapsed, and an outdoor basketball court was severely damaged after being undermined by erosion caused by waves. The storm exposed old cars put there decades prior as part of a now corroded sea wall. More boulders were placed to protect the basketball court that was damaged.

Despite the challenges, the area remains a popular destination, and plans for development continue. The Serra Siding project is proposed along the shoreline, which would build 1.2 miles (1.9 km) of additional siding track to create additional train capacity along this busy corridor.
