Located in Orange County, California, the Great Park in Irvine is a sprawling park that covers over 1,300 acres of land. But the Great Park didn't always exist in its current form - it has a rich history that spans several decades.
In the early 1940s, the land that now comprises the Great Park was used as a military base. At the time, it was known as Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, and it played a crucial role in American military operations during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
In 1999, the Marine Corps decommissioned the air station, and the land was transferred to the city of Irvine. The city immediately began plans to turn the land into a world-class park, and in 2002, the Great Park Corporation was created to oversee the development of the park.
The first phase of development began in 2005, and included the construction of a temporary visitors center, sports fields, and a balloon ride that offered panoramic views of the surrounding area. In 2007, the Great Park unveiled the Palm Court Arts Complex, which includes several art galleries, a performance space, and a cafe.
In the following years, the Great Park continued to grow and expand. In 2010, the Great Park Balloon was added, which is one of the largest tethered helium balloons in the world. The balloon is tethered to the ground and can hold up to 25 passengers at a time, offering incredible views of the park and the surrounding area.
Other attractions were added to the park, including a carousel, a farmers market, and a food and wine festival. The Great Park also became a popular venue for concerts, festivals, and other events, with the Hangar 244 venue hosting performances by world-renowned artists.
In recent years, the Great Park has continued to evolve, with new attractions and amenities being added on a regular basis. The park now includes a massive sports complex, hiking and biking trails, and an outdoor ice skating rink. In 2020, the Great Park opened the first phase of the Bosque, a 200-acre natural area that features walking paths, a botanical garden, and a reflecting pond.
Today, the Great Park is one of the premier destinations in Orange County, attracting millions of visitors each year. With its unique blend of history, natural beauty, and world-class amenities, the Great Park is a true testament to the power of community and the importance of preserving our shared spaces for generations to come.
