Fun Fact Friday: Perched above Old Town in Presidio Park the Mormon battalion view point offers breath taking views and pays a tribute The Mormon Battalion which was a group of about 500 Latter-day Saints who joined the United States Army in 1846, during the Mexican-American War, to help provide financial support for their families and other Mormon pioneers. Serving under the direction of army officers from July 1846 to July 1847, the Mormon Battalion marched nearly 2,000 miles across the southwestern United States arriving in San Diego. These efforts improved trails and navigating west allowing thousands of people to move easier to the west coast from the Midwest and other areas.

Fun Fact Friday: The Iconic North Park Water Tower was built in the 1920’s and stands roughly 120 feet tall. Upon completion it was one of the largest city water towers in the nation costing approximately $69,000 to construct. At that time the tower provided water to what was then a bigger University Heights encompassing all three neighborhoods including: Hillcrest and North Park as we know today. The water was pumped from wells in Mission Valley and then distributed to the designated areas. In 2013 the big green and blue steel tower was placed on the National Historical Registry and is here to stay.
