Novavax Vaccine Available in San Diego

Novavax, a vaccine against COVID-19 that does not rely on mRNA technology and instead uses a more traditional process used to make influenza vaccines, is now available in San Diego County and can be given by local healthcare providers, retail pharmacies, and community clinics. County public health centers and vaccination events also provide this vaccine at no cost. You can make an appointment to get the vaccine or find a walk-in clinic in your area here.

Novavax has been authorized as a two-dose primary series, and is given 3-8 weeks apart, to individuals who are 18 years and older. Clinical trials showed that the vaccine series is 90% effective at preventing mild, moderate, and severe COVID-19. For more information on vaccines, visit the County’s webpage COVID-19 Vaccines for resources, and additional vaccination sites.

2-1-1 Assisting with Scheduling Vaccination Appointments; Homebound

Homebound residents of any vaccine-eligible age may call 2-1-1 to register to receive a COVID-19 vaccine at their home.

There are also options for receiving a vaccine in a senior and disability-friendly environment. If you or your clients require special assistance, please call 2-1-1. Vaccine assistance is available if:

You do not have access to a computer
You need someone to assist you with scheduling a COVID-19 vaccine appointment
You need special accommodations at a vaccine clinic
You (or a loved one) are homebound, and need assistance getting a vaccination

Privacy Ordinance Ensuring Transparency Around Monitoring Tools Wins City Council Approval
Public safety is always a top priority of my administration – and we are a step closer to enhancing every San Diegans’ safety in their community with the City Council’s approval of our Privacy Ordinance. The ordinance outlines a set of regulations aimed at providing transparency and public input on all of the technology the City uses to measure and monitor activity in the public domain – and once it is in place, we will be able to deploy technology to keep people safe.

The ordinance mandates that City departments consult with the newly established Privacy Advisory Board on their plans to acquire or use surveillance or monitoring technology; conduct public hearings on the use of the technology as well as policies around the access to and use of data collected; obtain City Council approval for acquisition of surveillance technology; and report annually to the Privacy Advisory Board to ensure the use of approved technologies and data met the conditions prescribed during approval.

Monitoring technology includes cameras that help detect wildfires early, track usage of public trails by both people and wildlife, and cameras that support law enforcement’s efforts to prevent, respond to and solve crimes.

These regulations strike an appropriate balance between using technology to support city services with San Diegans’ rightful expectation of privacy.

Homelessness Update: New Shelter for Women Opens
The City has opened a new homeless shelter for women. Known as Rachel's Promise and operated by the Catholic Charities Diocese of San Diego, the 40-bed shelter is part of my continued efforts to ensure there are suitable shelters for the various unsheltered populations to come in off the streets and connect them with supportive services and a path to housing. Over the past year, more than 700 people have been placed directly from our shelters into permanent or longer-term homes
