The name came first. The lemons came after. 🍋

In 1892 Joseph Allison filed a subdivision map on the rolling land southeast of San Diego and called it Lemon Grove. His father Robert had come west as a sheep rancher and noticed something about this particular stretch of mesa: citrus loved it. Deep soil, almost no frost, and enough sea air to keep the summers honest.

Two pieces of infrastructure made the gamble work. The railroad reached the area in 1888, which meant fruit could leave. The first flume was built in 1891, which meant water could arrive. Add a post office in 1892, then a packing house, a depot and a store, and by 1895 these hills were acres of citrus worked by growers who organized a Fruit Growers Association and built their own school district.

The rest is a very Southern California story. Merchant Tony Sonka coined the slogan "Best Climate on Earth" in 1925, and the town raised its Big Lemon monument in 1928. Voters then rejected incorporation three separate times — 1955, 1958, 1964 — before Lemon Grove finally became California's 414th city in July 1977.

The orchards are gone. The lemon is still standing at the center of town.
