David Hockney has been one of my favorite artists since I studied photography at UCSD and wrote a paper about his work.
I’ve always been drawn to his paintings of pools, light, movement, and those unforgettable splashes that seem to capture a moment in time.
As a supporter and subscriber of the San Diego Opera, I also had the opportunity to appreciate his work in a completely different way through the stunning sets he designed for Turandot. His imagination transformed the stage into a living work of art.
What I admire most is that he has always lived and created on his own terms—curious, innovative, and unapologetically himself.
His work reminds me that light changes everything, whether it’s a painting, a photograph, a stage, or the place we call home.
Thank you, David Hockney, for helping us see the world differently.
