I couldn't let July go by without posting about seeing another incredible show at Backyard Renaissance on 4th of July eve, "The Rise and Fall of Little Voice", by Jim Cartwright. It was another fantastic production by one of San Diego's outstanding theatre companies who have made their home at the 10th Avenue Arts Center. As usual, the cast and production were outstanding, but a special shout out to Megan Carmitchel as the lead, Little Voice. I believe I first took notice of her in Cygnet's production of "Rock of Ages" a number of years ago. In this show, she gives a bravura performance that crescendos when she sings portions of famous standards, singing them in the voice of the original artists, changing from artist to artist on a dime. In all my years of theatre going, I've never seen (nor heard) anything like it. Can you say San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Award?

During our trip last month to Northern California, we visited with our old friend (and retired San Diego theatre critic) Jeff Smith in Santa Cruz. He and Bill go back to the early 1980's, and I can tell you the threatre references (and theatre "war stories") were coming at light speed from all three of us. LOL!

Last night we saw the San Diego premier of "Fellow Travelers" (based on the Thomas Mallon novel) at San Diego Opera at the Balboa Theatre. The production was great, perfect for the Balboa. The cast was outstanding with standout performances by tenor Andy Acosta as Timothy Laughlin, baritone Joseph Lattanzi as Hawkins Fuller and soprano Amber R. Monroe as Mary Johnson. The talkback afterwards was very well attended that included most of the cast, the director, composer Gregory Spears and authorThomas Mallon. Many heartfelt comments and questions came from the audience.

Not having the party this year allowed us a complete day off, enabling us to go the the Beaumont Ave 4th of July Parade in Upper Hermosa, a neighborhood just adjacent to ours. Upper Hermosa itself is a slice of Americana, where you'd expect see June Cleaver, Margaret Anderson and Harriet Nelson exchanging recipes on the side walk (lots of post-war Colonial Revival homes there). The parade has been going since 1980 and has food booths and bands. A definite neighborhood fixture.

A few weeks ago, my sister, Bill and I took a private tour of the USS Midway. My sister won a raffle a while back for a private tour and lunch and we were invited. Our tour guide Ed was excellent. He had served on the Midway from 1969-1971. We were on the ship for almost 5 hours and only saw 15% of it. The exhibits are excellent. The museum has 400 volunteers. We want to go back!

We saw a great production of "The Sound of Music" at the Civic a couple of weeks ago. Presented by Broadway San Diego, this is a fantastic touring production directed by Jack O'Brien. We saw it on a Wed. evening, and it was very well sold. It was great bumping into a lot of people we know!
