Justice Shaina Leonard has delivered a ruling that blocks a proposed referendum on Alberta's potential separation from Canada, determining that the province did not fulfill its obligation to consult with First Nations before proceeding. The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation and the Blackfoot Confederacy had challenged the legitimacy of Alberta's referendum process, asserting that separation would breach Treaty rights. With nearly 302,000 signatures collected, the petition submitted by the Stay Free Alberta group exceeded the requisite 178,000 signatures. Premier Danielle Smith had previously stated that the referendum could be included on the fall ballot pending sufficient support. Leonard's ruling emphasized the potential impact of Alberta's secession on Treaties 7 and 8 and declared the petition should not have been sanctioned.
