‘it’s been a long time coming’: the bay area’s filipino baking scene is more exciting than ever

la kalidad is no ordinary pie shop. there are pies stained purple from ube and others filled with crispy creme brulee and banana compote in a recipe inspired by turon, a filipino dessert. others infuse curd with calamansi citrus or take champorado, the chocolate sticky rice pudding of the philippines, as a base.

“i wanted to bring out my heritage and the flavors that i grew up with,” la kalidad owner angelica nulud said.

the bay area is seeing a surge of new, small filipino bakeries, which are gaining followings through pop-ups, farmers’ market booths and cultural events. the common thread among these bakers: they are bringing together traditional filipino flavors and a diverse array of carbs to create an exciting, new genre that feels distinctly filipino american.

this is ours at our first friends-giving-holiday party. we starting over 2 years ago in the middle of the 2020 lockdown. we met exclusively over zoom and very quickly came to trust and love each other 😍 ⁣

this one is personally important -- i'm so proud to have been an inaugural scholarship donor and am committed to donating every year. i'm constantly amazed at what and do for the filipino community and for the larger community to protect and uplift children in SOMA and throughout and the Bay Area.⁣

for please consider donating to the united playaz | west bay dayday memorial scholarship. this fund was created to support extraordinary high school seniors and college students who have overcome adversity to attend college and are facing financial hardship in achieving their college dreams.⁣

the fund was named in honor of Day'von "DayDay" Hann, a united playaz student who had high hopes and dreams of college. dayday fell victim to gun violence and was tragically killed on july 8, 2019 and would have been part of his high school graduating class of 2022.⁣

in july 2022, United Playaz and West Bay Pilipino Multi-Service Center, both 501(c)(3) organizations, along with its generous donors, awarded $24,000 in college scholarships. these recipients are doing great work and remain committed to giving back to our community.⁣

s.f. could be getting another tower after developer trades affordable housing site for additional height

a stalled residential high-rise near the intersection of van ness avenue and market street could move forward after a deal where the developer would be allowed extra height and density in exchange for purchasing a nearby parcel and dedicating it to san francisco for affordable housing.

under the agreement between supervisor dean preston and developer related california, the height of an approved tower at 98 franklin st. would increase from 365 feet to 400 feet, which would allow the developer to increase the number of units by 40 — from 345 to 385.

as a trade-off, related has lined up a deal to purchase the former mcdonald’s fast food site at 600 van ness, which will be given to the mayor’s office of housing and community development. that site is approved for 168 units. Because the van ness site can accommodate significantly more affordable units than would be required onsite, related would not have to pay about $6.5 million in fees, according to the proposed agreement.
