It all started with a piano and a chance encounter in Paris. “The apartment has been in the family since the late 1970s,” the Beirut-born inhabitant explains of her abode, which is located not far from the Arc de Triomphe. “The previous owner had this piano and said, ‘If you want the apartment, you have to take the piano,’ since he didn’t want to move it out. It then became the starting point for everything [that followed].”

“I saw a 19th-century Italian marble table that I thought would be perfect for our entryway,” explains Kim Vaage Jones (), the owner and designer of this Vancouver home she shares with husband and former star David Jones. “[But] when I called to buy it, the seller said it had been sold.” For weeks, Vaage Jones was upset. She began to think of different options for the space, but each time her mind came back to that one vintage Italian marble table. “Turns out the buyer was my husband, who had quietly purchased the table as a birthday present.”

Look at this beautiful home with this vibrant Mediterranean inspired architecture in the Marina District. 🌊

Build in the 20th Century, these one- or two-story single-family homes often had street-level garages, flat roofs, and windows that stretched across the whole width of the house. Marina homes also usually come with a living room that faces the street and bedrooms that face the rear of the home.

San Francisco is home to a wide variety of different house styles. 🏘️

The layout of this family home on Lake Champlain may be complex, but the detailing and materials are firmly rooted in local traditions. “We did a lot of research,” says architect Gil Schafer (), “especially at the nearby and its collection of historic buildings. Some of my friends questioned the crazy-quilt stone masonry on the façade, but, in fact, it is exactly the same as on one of the houses there. We looked to the big, old summer houses of the later-19th and early-20th centuries for inspiration. That’s why the living room and entry are paneled with vertical boards, why we decided on knotty pine for the library.”
