California is in the middle of a housing crisis—and not just because we haven’t built enough. We’re also losing the affordable homes we already have.

In just the last 5 years, 268,000 homes that rent at affordable levels on the private market—the kind that low-income families actually live in—lost their affordability to rent hikes and speculation.

CAPP (the Community Anti-Displacement and Preservation Program) is designed to fix this by acquiring at-risk homes and preserve them as affordable for generations.

Tell your legislators: Fund CAPP in the bond.

This week, we were proud to stand with housing advocates, organizers, elected leaders, and community partners to celebrate the expansion of the Housing Trust Fund, including a $70 million commitment toward housing preservation and community land trusts.

This investment means more homes can be taken off the speculative market and placed into permanent community stewardship.

San Francisco just proposed the largest investment in affordable housing in a generation, including a $70 million bond dedicated to the preservation work we do here at SFCLT.

Our Executive Director Saki Bailey said it plainly: this is the difference between stability and displacement for the tenants living in those buildings right now.

SFCLT has spent more than two decades proving that community ownership works. This bond is a tool that makes that work possible before buildings get flipped, before tenants get pushed out, before neighborhoods lose the people who make them what they are.

We’ll keep fighting to make sure this investment reaches the communities that need it most.

Last week, a devastating fire at SFCLT’s building at 285 Turk displaced multiple families from their homes in the Tenderloin.

Thankfully, no one was physically injured, but many residents lost belongings and are now facing the difficult process of temporary relocation and recovery while the building undergoes major repairs.

Statement Regarding Early Morning Fire at SFCLT Property

The San Francisco Community Land Trust (SFCLT) is deeply saddened by a fire that occurred early this morning at one of our residential buildings in the Tenderloin.

The fire began at approximately 12:30 a.m. and was met with a rapid response from the San Francisco Fire Department and emergency personnel. At this time, the cause of the fire remains unknown and is under investigation. We are grateful that as of this morning there have been no reported injuries.

40 households and 2 commercial tenants have been impacted by this incident. The American Red Cross and San Francisco emergency response teams assisted with transportation for residents to temporary shelter accommodations overnight.

Our immediate priority is the safety, stability, and well-being of every resident affected by this fire. SFCLT staff and property management are actively working to assess the extent of the damage and identify relocation options for residents who are unable to return to their homes.

This is an incredibly difficult and uncertain moment for our residents and community. We are asking our partners, neighbors, and broader community to support recovery efforts by sharing leads on possible temporary relocation options and available housing resources.

Affordable housing isn’t always about building something massive from the ground up.

Sometimes, it’s about finding creative ways to help long-term residents stay in the communities they’ve spent decades building their lives in.

This project took years of planning, coordination, and construction. But today, it means greater stability for the people who already call this building home.

Housing preservation can look many different ways. Sometimes, it looks like one new unit making it possible for an entire community to remain rooted.

San Francisco just put its weight behind a statewide response to displacement.

On Tuesday, the SF Board of Supervisors passed a resolution supporting SB 1091 — California legislation that would create the Community Anti-Displacement and Preservation Program and fund the acquisition and rehab of affordable homes across the state.

This is what leadership looks like.

SFCLT has been pushing for this because we know what's possible when communities can acquire and preserve housing before it's lost to speculation. We've seen it work here in San Francisco. Now we're fighting to make it real statewide.
