When a parent passes away, the emotional weight is already heavy.
The paperwork that follows can make things feel even more overwhelming.
Having a few key documents gathered early can make the process much smoother for you and your family.
Here are some of the most important ones to locate:
Death Certificates
Order at least 10 certified copies. Banks, insurance companies, Social Security, and other institutions will all require them.
The Will
If there is one, locate it as soon as possible. It typically needs to be filed with the court.
Trust Documents
If your parent had a living trust, review it to identify the successor trustee and how assets are meant to be handled.
Property Deeds
How a property is titled determines what happens next. Joint ownership, trusts, and individual ownership all lead to different outcomes.
Bank & Financial Statements
Look for account numbers, balances, and whether beneficiaries are named.
Life Insurance Policies
Confirm the beneficiary and contact the insurance company early.
Tax Returns
The last 2–3 years may be needed for estate administration.
Bills & Debts
Mortgage, credit cards, and other obligations must typically be addressed by the estate before assets are distributed.
Starting with these documents early can prevent unnecessary stress later.
