Social Security Spouse Benefits – Things to Know if you are Eligible

Social security spouse benefits are eligible to you if you are widowed, divorced, or even still married. However, there are a few things you should know when claiming social security irrespective of the category you fall into.

Widowed Spouses Benefits
You can claim your spouse’s social security, as early as 60 years, upon his/her death, if you have been married for more than 9 months. However, keep in mind; you cannot claim your benefit, as well as, your spouse’s. You are applicable to claim only the larger the benefit. The surviving spouse is also eligible to receive a lump sum, upon the death of the spouse, if living in the same house. If you wait till 70 to collect on social security, you can use it as life insurance. Remember, if you claim, your spouse’s social security, before full retirement age, you stand to lose a significant amount of money. However, if you wait till full retirement age, you can get 100% of your spouse’s benefit amount.

Ex-Spouses Benefits
If you are divorced, the maximum you can claim from your spouse’s social security is 50% of what your ex-spouse would get at full retirement age. You will not be able to collect your ex-spouse’s social security if you are remarried. Your marriage to your ex-spouse should have lasted for more than 10 years, and your spouse has to be 62 or over. You will be eligible for your ex-spouse’s benefits even if your ex-spouse has not filed for these benefits. Keep in mind; you have more benefits if you wait to claim these benefits after full retirement age. If your ex-spouse is younger than you, you can always collect your benefits and then collect theirs once you become eligible.

Current Spouse Benefits
If you are still married, you can collect your social security, and collect 50% of your spouse’s benefits calculated at full retirement age. If you earn more or less than your spouse, you will automatically be eligible to get the higher spousal benefit. If your spouse has reached full retirement age, you can claim his/her benefits and claim yours once you reach full retirement age. This way you get a higher benefit. Remember, if both of you take your benefits before full retirement age; you will both stand to lose a significant amount from your benefits.

You need to pay close attention to details before you claim social security spouse benefits. This way, you will get more benefits.

A Taste Of Summer

It’s that time of year when things start to heat up, and farmer’s markets are packed to overflowing with ripe summer fruits that beg to be piled into shopping baskets. Mounds of jewel-toned berries, fragrant melons, warm juicy peaches, need I say more? It’s pretty easy to get a bit overzealous and purchase far too much to be eaten in a few days, so what to do?

For a taste of summer all year long, place cut fruit in a single layer on a cookie sheet, and freeze it before storing it in containers so that you don’t risk them becoming one solid block. You can use frozen fruits in smoothies, baking, or just for snacking!

Making your own preserves is what I call summer in a jar. The beauty of homemade vs store-bought jams is being able to control the amount of sugar used, and it’s fun to play around with different combinations such as strawberry rhubarb, mixed berry or peach, and apricot. There’s nothing better on toast or over yogurt for a quick breakfast.

Stone fruits such as peaches, plums, and apricots are fantastic when grilled. Preparing them this way caramelizes the natural sugars, and is absolute bliss topped with ice cream or honey-sweetened creme fraiche.

Pies and cobblers are quintessential summer and are the perfect potluck dessert. Any fresh or frozen fruit can be used here making it ideal for using the 10 pounds of peaches you had to buy!

Get fruity with your salsa recipe and try combining strawberries, peaches, or pineapple with avocado, jalapeño, and lime for an amazing sweet and spicy addition to your next fiesta.

Eaten by the greedy bowl full is essential, but try experimenting with different preparations of your favorite fruits for an unforgettable flavor experience!

Best BBQ Sauce Recipes to Try This Summer

BBQ sauce is a sauce that you can enjoy with any type of meat, including chicken, pork, beef, and ribs.

There are many different variations of BBQ sauce, varying from BBQ sauces that have vinegar flavors to BBQ sauces that have a tomato base or a mustard base. There is generally a type of BBQ sauce that could suit anyone’s tastes.

Here are the ten most popular BBQ sauces available:
Big Daddy’s Carolina Style BBQ sauce is a vinegar and mustard-based sauce, which is different from the normal BBQ sauce that you find in the southwest which has a ketchup and molasses base. The combination of sweet and tangy flavors that you get from Big Daddy’s Carolina Style BBQ sauce brings out the absolute best in grilled and smoked pork and chicken.
St. Louis BBQ sauce is a bit thinner and has a more tangy flavor than most BBQ sauces. This BBQ sauce has many different influences that play a part in its taste, and it can be made in a few different ways to your liking. This sauce has many of the elements that make up a proper St. Louis BBQ.
The classic BBQ rib sauce is something that is always associated with the taste of great ribs, and great ribs just wouldn’t taste the same without a classic BBQ rib sauce to accompany it. The classic BBQ rib sauce has that smoky flavor combined with a touch of heat and that deep flavor that ties it all together.
The Kansas City rib sauce is a tomato-based sauce that gives you a traditional combination of a nice sweet flavor with a little kick of heat in a dark and thick tomato sauce. You can adjust the heat of this sauce to your liking by changing the amount of cayenne added to it.
The Memphis BBQ sauce is a sauce that combines sweetness and vinegar and a little bit of heat all into one sauce. Traditionally, Memphis Barbecue is typically served without a sauce, but since rules are made to be broken, many Memphis BBQ restaurants have sauces available, either on the side or by special order.
The best odds pulled pork sauce is a sauce that is added to the pork after it has been smoked and pulled. It is best to cook it slowly with the pork in a big pan so that it brings out the best flavors possible from the sauce. This BBQ sauce has a vinegar base with a bit of heat as well, and it works perfectly with the pork.
The Piedmont BBQ sauce is of the thinner, vinegar-based variety, but it contains lots of flavors. This sauce is normally used when eating pork because it has a rich tangy flavor to it that works so well, but to put it simply this is a great sauce that could be used for just about everything.
The mustard BBQ sauce is a sauce that works well with anything, but it was made especially for smoked pork. It adds great flavor to it and the mustard adds a bit of heat that really brings out the best flavors from the food.
The North Carolina BBQ chicken sauce is a vinegar-based sauce that also has a tangy flavor combined with a little bit of sweetness. This sauce really enhances the smokiness of the chicken, and it finishes off a BBQ chicken perfectly.
Jack Daniel’s rib glaze is a glaze that you will need to add to your food toward the end of its cooking, and you want to make it so that the sauce will stick to the surface of the ribs without burning. To do this you need to keep the temperature low and cook it slowly until you see when it is stuck to the food. With the long simmer, all of the alcohol will evaporate from the sauce and it will leave behind a brilliant glaze that has a small whiskey flavor to it.

Easy Summer Gardening Tips for 55+ Seniors

Many 55 plus seniors I know love gardening. It is a great stress-reliever and helps keep them active and healthy. Now that summer is here, many of you may want to pay attention to your garden and show it off to your friends and neighbors. You may find that gardening or keeping your lawn can sometimes be a very difficult and tiresome task. However, this does not have to be so. With a little planning and the right tools, you will be able to spend less time working on the garden and more time lounging in your deck chair enjoying the fruits of your labor. Here are a few easy summer gardening tips for you.

Select the Right Tools

This is one of the most important things when you garden. Before you purchase the highest tech tools consider the size of your garden. Do you really need big, heavy machinery? Consider your health as you will be doing the work. Lifting heavy machines can tax your health. Select tools that are comfortable and easy to use.

Consider Low-Maintenance Plants

Sometimes, the plants that look the best require the most maintenance. Some of these plants may need to be looked after carefully during winter and this is sure to keep you spending more time than you should in your garden. So, if you want to spend the least time in your garden, yet you want it to look good, consider low-maintenance plants, such as peonies, coneflowers, and black-eyed-Susans.

Use a Garden Cultivator

These things are excellent for maintaining your garden and will cut your garden time by half. An electric cultivator will speed up the soil-preparing process and make quick work of compost, fertilizer, etc. as well as, eliminate weeds.

Use Containers for a Change of Scene

Planting in pots will save you the time of digging up plants. If you want a change of scene try ceramic pots with holes in the bottom and plant your flowers in them. They are pretty and will let you do some of your trimming and pruning work in the shade, by simply shifting the pots to where you can sit down and work on them.

Recycle the Clippings

Clippings are the remnants of grass and other things that you bag after you mow your lawn. Leaving these clippings adds vital nutrients back into the soil when they decompose. The best news about this is you spend less time and energy bagging the clippings.

Always take a Break

Mowing your lawn and other gardening activities can tax your body. This can stress your muscles and joints. If you feel tired or wrung out, keep your work for another day. Your health is more important than a pretty garden.

If you adhere to these tips, you will not only have a well-kept garden but will spend less time on it and more time enjoying the summer and the fruits of your labors.

The Health Trend You Won’t Find In a Bottle

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but could the key to good health be where you live? Feeling your best in everything you do extends beyond the hours you’re putting in at the gym. Longevity and vitality is a lifestyle rather than a health fad, and while juice cleanses, and superfoods are fabulous, experiencing mind-body health is one that 55+ communities have made their core focus. Anyone who’s researched this neighborhood turned “wellness retreats” has probably noticed a common thread of buzzwords like active, socially engaged, and connected. From the simplistic to the most opulent communities, most would agree that retirement isn’t being done sitting down.

Time, and time again, studies have proven the healing benefits of healthy social relationships, and how they improve everything from cardiovascular health to depression. Active adult communities are specifically designed to bring neighbors together through social clubs, events, and competitive games. The peer community atmosphere is ideal for singles to meet new people, and reduce feelings of loneliness. One resident said that since her move, life had become more socially enhanced, and she even became a cookie delivering member of the welcoming committee. These communities foster a no-pressure approach to getting out there by offering activities to suit any lifestyle.

From sprawling golf courses, indoor/outdoor pools, trails, and sporting courts, communities take boosting endorphins very seriously. Group sports to a sweat session at the gym, boomers, and retirees of any fitness level can enjoy life on the move. Adding resort style to the mix, communities like Trilogy at Vistancia offer an endless menu of active amenities with free exercise classes, a wellness spa, and world-class fitness centers. The beauty of on-site fitness? No need to warm up the car to squeeze in a workout and a variety of activities allows you to change it up either on your own or with a group of friends.

In a society where high stress and adrenal burnout is king, don’t underestimate the power of relaxation. Active lifestyle communities know that working hard, and playing hard should be followed by a moment to reflect. Many offer serene outdoor spaces, community gardens, and some with on-site cafes to enjoy some downtime. Whether it’s whipping up a culinary masterpiece in a gourmet kitchen, gathering with friends around the fire pit, or a sunrise stroll with a loved one, taking a time to breathe, and be mindful isn’t something you’ll find in a multi-vitamin.

Does Pantone’s 2020 Color Choice Look Familiar?

The color has been shown on painted walls, rugs, decorative pillow accents, and even kitchen cabinets.

Pantone joins other paint firms in choosing a blue shade for its 2020 top color pick. The paint firm PPG chose “Chinese Porcelain” as its top color pick, a blend of cobalt and muted navy tones. Also, Sherwin Williams named “Naval,” a deep navy blue, as its 2020 color of the year.

Blues offer a bold color pop but tend to be a timeless favorite, Pantone says. The hue can help anchor a space, says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

“The Pantone Color of the Year highlights the relationship between trends in color and what is taking place in our global culture at a moment in time, a color that reflects what individuals feel they need that color can hope to answer,” adds Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute. “As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication, and a way to express and affect ideas and emotions, designers and brands should feel inspired to use color to engage and connect.”

Have some fun and add a touch of Blue to your decor in 2020!

Enhancements And Added Protections In Recent Years Make The Reverse Mortgage An Attractive Tool For Retirees Looking To Secure Their Financial Future.

Designed to allow homeowners to remain in a home as long as possible, while supplementing their income, HECMs could be an integral part of retirement planning. Their versatility may aid in tax reduction, investment, aging-in-place or even travel strategies. Financial Planners and Real Estate Professionals, remember that I will work WITH you and your clients to utilize the equity in their homes to possibly make their retirement more comfortable. Let's partner together to help our elder community thrive during their retirement. With our programs, we can work together to find the right solution for your clients.
