I’ve walked buyers through more homes than I can count, and I’ll tell you — it’s rarely the dated kitchen that kills it. 👀
It’s the small stuff they clock in the first 30 seconds.
1. The house that smells too nice.
Three wall plug-ins and a candle in every room reads as “what are we hiding?” One neutral scent is plenty.
2. Toilet brush on display.
Everyone owns one. Nobody wants an introduction. Under the sink it goes.
3. A pile of shoes at the entry.
The entry is the first impression, and shoes shrink it instantly. Closet, bin, garage — anywhere but the floor.
4. Counters doing too much.
Air fryer, coffee maker, blender, toaster, the mail stack. Buyers start wondering where they’d actually cook. Clear 80% of it.
5. Family photos in every room.
A couple is fine. But buyers need room to imagine their life in that space, not tour yours.
6. The “…what is that?” smell.
Disposal, drains, pets, laundry room. They won’t say a word about it — they’ll just remember it.
Here’s the part that stings: buyers almost never tell you what turned them off. They walk out and say “it just wasn’t for us,” and you never find out why.
Prepping a home to sell isn’t only deep cleaning and pretty photos. It’s clearing out the tiny distractions that quietly move a buyer from “I love this” to “eh.”
