Sometimes home inspections require a little extra Courage… Good thing I had my InterNACHI medallion and my Torch Flashlight 😂🔦

I couldn’t help myself with this one. If you were a fan of Jim Carrey in the 90s and 2000s—especially Ace Ventura—you’ll get this one. 🦇 🦇

Another HUD foundation inspection completed, this time in Heron, Montana. One of the perks of this job is getting to travel throughout Idaho, Washington, and Montana and visit places I might not otherwise see!

The Northern Home Inspection display at Numerica Credit Union in Ponderay got a nice little refresh.
I brought in more of the useful stuff, including USB C rechargeable flashlights, torpedo levels, high quality neoprene koozies, tape measures, fridge magnets, stickers, and a few other small items.

The flashlights are really nice, and the torpedo levels, tape measures, and koozies are all things people can actually use around the house, in the truck, or in a tool drawer.

The team at the Ponderay branch was awesome when I brought everything in. They were all about the new items for the display, and I was happy to make sure they got some too.

If you are in the area, stop by the Ponderay branch and grab something from the display while it is available. Thanks again to Numerica for continuing to support local small businesses.

Numerica Credit Union does a great job supporting local small businesses. When they reached out and asked if Northern Home Inspection would be their featured “Business of the Month,” we were honored.

We set up the display in their Ponderay lobby, and it turned out great.

A big thank you to the Numerica team for the invite and for their continued support of local small businesses and the community.

Stop by the branch, check it out, and grab some Northern Home Inspection swag!

A while back I posted this barn as the photo in a joke about homeowners who think everything is fine. The joke wasn’t about the barn. It was just the perfect visual. I’ve been in North Idaho about 15 years, and this barn was already old long before I got here. Still, it became one of those landmarks you recognize right away. I was working in the area Friday and saw it had collapsed. Tough to see. It stood a long time. There’s something about old places like that. They carry history, hard work, and a lot of seasons. Nothing lasts forever, but I’m grateful I got to see it standing. RIP.

Came across this panel and it immediately reminded me of watching A Christmas Story.

These old fuse panels just feel like a different era. They were mostly phased out of new construction back in the 1960s and early 1970s once circuit breakers became the standard. They are not super common anymore, but they are not unheard of either. I still come across a few every year in older homes around North Idaho.

There is no exact expiration date stamped on an electrical panel, but most modern breaker panels typically get replaced somewhere in that 25 to 40 year range depending on condition and use. When you are looking at something likely 60 plus years old, it is generally considered outdated and often recommended for replacement.

Fuse panels have limited capacity by today's standards and carry a higher risk of improper fuse replacement, which can create safety concerns. It is way too easy for someone to screw a 30 amp fuse into a slot meant for a 15 amp wire to stop it from blowing, and that creates a major fire hazard. Plus, getting a new home insurance policy with one of these active is usually pretty tough.

This one has definitely earned retirement.

If you were buying a home or representing a client and were to see this... what would you think?
