There is a quiet confidence found only in homes that have endured for generations.

Greystone is one of those rare places.

Completed between 1913 and 1915, the home remains a remarkable expression of the American Craftsman movement, an era when architecture celebrated honesty of materials, thoughtful proportions, and extraordinary workmanship. More than a century later, those principles are evident in every room.

Quarter-sawn oak woodwork wraps the walls in rich warmth, its distinctive grain revealing the meticulous craftsmanship of another time. The formal dining room’s crowning glory is its original floor-to-ceiling built-in service buffet, six drawers crafted with precision and designed to serve generations of gatherings. Nearby, a working butler annunciator quietly recalls an era when hospitality was an art form, and every detail had its place.

Even the home's earliest innovations remain preserved. Original brass vacuum ports, part of one of the earliest central vacuum prototypes ever installed, offer a fascinating glimpse into the ingenuity that has always been part of Greystone's story. Glass door k***s catch the afternoon light, vintage fixtures illuminate the hallways, reclaimed church doors lend new purpose to the pantry, and handcrafted millwork continues to frame each room with timeless elegance.

Yet Greystone was never intended to become a museum.

Its careful evolution reflects a philosophy of stewardship rather than renovation, preserving its architectural soul while embracing the comforts expected of today's finest homes.

The grounds at Greystone carry the feeling of a secret garden, lush, intimate, and designed to be discovered gradually.
A series of terraces creates layered outdoor spaces, each offering its own perspective and purpose. Stone pathways and newly installed paver walkways guide movement through the landscape, where seating areas, water features, and a hexagonal cedar gazebo invite both gathering and quiet moments of relaxation and reflection.
Plantings are abundant and thoughtful, drawing inspiration from the nearby gardens of Manito Park. Perennial beds, vegetable garden, herb garden, flowering shrubs, and mature trees, including Japanese maples and established evergreens, create a landscape that evolves with the seasons. Custom iron fencing and privacy trellising lend to a feeling of seclusion and escape from the bustling city beyond.
Supported by a comprehensive irrigation system and thoughtful lighting, the grounds are as functional as they are expressive; they are designed to be lived in, experienced fully, and appreciated over time.
A collection of well-considered outbuildings extends the Greystone experience. supporting outdoor living with purpose and ease.
The pool house is positioned to serve as a natural gathering point, with updated mechanical systems ensuring reliable performance and comfort throughout the seasons. A two-story carriage house offers flexibility and utility, thoughtfully equipped with modern systems, workspace, and storage.

At the beginning of Greystone’s story are Dr. Frank Fursey and his wife, Isabelle, early residents of Spokane’s South Hill at a time when the city was coming into its own.
Dr. Fursey, a physician whose work placed him within the fabric of Spokane’s growing community beginning in 1903, was a graduate of the University of Toronto, where he and Isabelle were originally from. He continued his studies in Edinburgh, Scotland, and later pursued specialized graduate work at the Chelsea Women’s Hospital in London, leading Dr. Fursey to become one of the first obstetricians in Spokane. He also maintained ties to the region’s broader economic landscape through involvement in the mining industry as president of a Butte, Montana-based ore mining company. It was a period defined by momentum and optimism, when the prosperity of the Inland Northwest began to shape not only commerce, but the way people chose to live. It is believed that Dr. Fursey’s wife, Isabelle, was of Scottish descent, a fact reflected in some of the nuances of Greystone's style.
In commissioning Greystone, the Furseys created more than a residence. They established a home grounded in permanence. Constructed of substantial granite from local quarries and positioned within a carefully considered landscape, the home maintains an inviting elegance of the time.
There are also indications that the home served, in part, as a place of practice. It is believed that Dr. Fursey saw patients within Greystone. Subtle details suggest a blending of professional life and domestic setting, not uncommon for physicians of the time.
While much of their daily life remains softly held in the past, the influence of those early years is still present. The scale of the rooms, the sequence of spaces, and the relationship between the house and the garden all speak to a way of living that balances purpose with grace and formality with ease.
Today, Greystone carries that legacy forward, not as a preserved moment, but as a living one. Each successive steward has contributed to its care and continuity, ensuring that the spirit first established by the Furseys remains present, relevant, and enduring.

In the early years of the 20th century, Spokane emerged as the cultural and economic center of the Inland Northwest, a city shaped by the convergence of industry, resource, and ambition. Wealth generated from the copper mines of Montana and the timberlands of North Idaho flowed into Spokane, where it was expressed not only in commerce but in the way the city chose to build, plan, and live.
Developed during this period of growth, the Rockwood neighborhood was among the city’s most intentional residential enclaves. Designed with winding roads, varied elevations, and generously sized parcels that responded to the natural landscape rather than imposing upon it. It was here that many of Spokane’s professionals and civic leaders established homes that reflected their success and a sense of place.
At the heart of this vision is Manito Park, one of the city’s most enduring and defining civic spaces. Originally acquired in the early 1900s, Manito was transformed from open land into a carefully composed public garden, reflecting a broader national movement that saw landscape design as essential to civic life.
This transformation was guided in part by the influence of the Olmsted Brothers, whose work helped shape park systems across the United States, including New York City’s Central Park. Their philosophy, rooted in harmony between built and natural environments, emphasized the importance of green space, thoughtful planning, and the experience of moving through a landscape.
The South Hill continues to offer a lifestyle defined by proximity and ease. Morning walks in Manito’s gardens, afternoons along the tree-lined streets of Rockwood, and evenings spent in the nearby Perry District create a lifestyle that feels easy and unhurried. Independent cafés, neighborhood markets, and local gathering places offer a sense of community, while downtown Spokane remains just minutes away.
Greystone is not simply located on the South Hill; it is part of a larger, enduring landscape shaped by design, community, and a shared appreciation for how a place should be lived.
