What I thought life in Utah would look like when we moved here…
quiet, unfamiliar, and honestly a little isolating.

We moved without knowing many people.
We weren’t members of the predominant faith in the area.
And just one month later, the world shut down.

I remember worrying that we’d feel like outsiders — that building community would be hard, or maybe not happen at all.

But the reality ended up being the complete opposite.

Even in that first year, living mostly inside our bubble with no family nearby, we began laying the foundation for something real. Neighbors were kind and welcoming. Our kids found friends to play with. Simple dog walks slowly turned into group walks, conversations, and connection.

Six years later, that sense of community has only deepened.
It didn’t happen overnight — but it grew steadily, organically, and with a lot of care.

Utah is unique in many ways, and I never imagined it becoming home when we first arrived.
But here we are — and I’ll happily be “driving my limo to the supermarket” here for a long time to come. 🤍

There’s no such thing as perfect… but I gotta say, for as much as I fought moving here 6 years ago, I’ve really fallen in love.

The community is full of warm, welcoming and creative people.

The access to the outdoors year round is unbeatable.

And the homes… I mean. Seriously. No matter what you’re looking for: charm & character, mountain lodge, lots of space, big yard, horse property, low maintenance with an HOA - you can genuinely find it all - and all within less than an hour (in traffic!) from the city.

just opens their new storefront in SoJo and it’s the most darling spot!

When we first got to Utah it felt like everything was big-box stores and franchises. But the longer we’re here the more of these little gems we find - perfect small businesses that are born in this community out of love and creativity.

Congrats Modern + Chic! The store is gorgeous and I was so excited to be at the ribbon cutting with the !

If you’re thinking about moving to Utah, especially to South Jordan & surrounding areas, there are a few things people don’t always mention — but you’ll definitely notice once you’re here.

A few honest insights from lived experience:

• “The Beehive State” is real. Community shows up in schools, neighborhoods, and local events.
• The elevation adjustment is real. Extra water + taking it slow those first weeks helps a lot.
• Winter inversion happens. Utah has 250+ sunny days, but air quality matters in winter.
• Traffic patterns surprise people. Growth has changed commutes — timing matters more than distance.
• Culture is nuanced and evolving. Neighborhoods vary widely, even within the same city.
• This is true desert living. Dry air, strong sun, light powdery snow — hydration is key year-round.
• And one fun note: there are a lot of redheads here — my 9-year-old has two others in her class. 🧡

Relocating isn’t about finding the “perfect” place — it’s about understanding the environment you’re stepping into.

As a realtor and a mom who relocated from California to Utah, my brain doesn’t just see square footage or finishes when I walk into a home.

I immediately picture real life happening here.
Birthday parties. Holidays. Loud kitchens. Extra chairs pulled in from the garage.

Because the homes that work best aren’t just beautiful — they’re the ones that hold people well.

When we first relocated here for work, I assumed it would be temporary (a couple of years, max).

I had questions about culture, lifestyle differences, and whether we’d ever really feel settled.

And yes, there were adjustments.
Some things are different.
Some norms weren’t what we were used to.

But what surprised me most was how much easier life felt once we were here.

We found real community.

Our girls are thriving in school, surrounded by classmates from many different backgrounds.

My husband’s commute into downtown Salt Lake City is about 25 minutes (not the hour-plus we had come to expect).

And we spend so much more time outside, building core memories and giving our kids a childhood we’re genuinely proud of.

Utah has a very family-first rhythm, and when you have littles in tow, that ends up mattering far more than the things I thought would be dealbreakers.

Yes, there were cultural differences to learn.

But at the end of the day… does it really take that much more effort to stop by the liquor store on Saturday instead of Sunday?

For us, the trade-offs were worth it… and then some.
