Today, we pause to honor and remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

Twenty-five years later, we remember the nearly 3,000 innocent lives taken that day, including the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and countless others who ran toward danger to help people they had never met.

We remember their courage. We remember their sacrifice. We remember the families whose lives were forever changed. And we remember the unity and strength our nation showed in the days that followed.

For those of us in the fire service, September 11 will forever hold a special place in our hearts. We honor the 343 members of the FDNY who made the ultimate sacrifice that day, as well as those who have since lost their lives from illnesses related to their service at Ground Zero.

25 years later, we still remember. We will always remember.

There is an island on Florida's Gulf coast where people wake before sunrise, hunch over the sand for hours, and go home thrilled with nothing but a bucket of seashells. 🐚

Sanibel Island, just off the coast near Fort Myers, is one of the best shelling beaches in the entire world. The secret is in its geography. Unlike most barrier islands, Sanibel runs east to west, so it acts like a giant scoop, catching shells that drift up from the warm Gulf and laying them along its beaches by the thousands. After a winter storm the sand can be piled with whelks, conchs, scallops, olives, and delicate coquinas in every color. The hunt is so beloved that the hunched over posture of the shell seekers has earned its own affectionate nickname, the Sanibel Stoop.

Beyond the shelling, Sanibel has fiercely guarded its old Florida character. More than half the island is wildlife refuge, there are no high rise buildings, and the pace is set by bicycles and slow country lanes rather than traffic and towers. A historic lighthouse still marks the eastern tip, and roseate spoonbills and ibis wade in the mangroves just inland from the shore. It is the kind of place that feels like Florida the way it used to be. 🌅
