With many now facing the prospect of having to arrange for care and housing for their aging parents, in-laws and other relatives, secondary dwelling units can offer families a practical
solution. A back yard home BYH on their home’s property allows adult children care for aging parents in a semi-independent living arrangement. Is the goverment on your side? Many communities have adopted exemptions, fee waivers or fee reductions for a growing list of fees normally charged for residential development. Some examples are: impact fee exemptions, discounted building or planning fees, or reduced sewer and water connections fees, reduction of design or development requirements such as required parking spaces, or allow modification of dimensional requirements such as setbacks, building height and lot coverage to make additional units possible, or reduce the development costs. This has been clearly documented by both public and private housing groups showing the nature and extent of this affordable housing crisis. BYHs are an inexpensive way to provide the answers that home owners seek for rental income, in-law spaces and home offices.
