As team leaders, broker-owners, it’s natural to feel proud when someone chooses to align with us.
We invest in them, coach them, share resources, and pour into their growth.
But where many leaders struggle is when it comes to the other side of the journey, when someone decides to move on.
Too often, leaders take it personally. They get offended, feel hurt, or even betrayed.
But the truth is….
leadership isn’t about holding people back, it’s about leading them forward, even to the point where they may grow beyond your team, your systems, or your environment.
And how beautiful is that?
To know you were a meaningful part of their story, even if just for a chapter. To know you helped someone grow, evolve, and step into their next season.
That is not a loss
it’s a privilege
Recently,
I had one of my agents exit the team after four years.
Was I sad? Absolutely.
But not for the reasons people might assume.
I wasn’t sad about losing an agent.
I wasn’t sad about the transactions or the production.
My sadness came from something deeper, the human connection we built.
The laughs, the challenges, the memories, and the countless moments that bonded us beyond business.
This agent was one of my originals, my OG.
And she left the same way she worked for four years, with integrity, respect, and grace.
That, to me, is a reflection of the environment we created.
A space where people can not only grow, but also leave without burning bridges, without resentment, and with gratitude on both sides.
As leaders, our responsibility is to create those environments.
To celebrate people when they join us with open arms and enthusiasm, and to celebrate them when they leave us—with gratitude and honor for the journey we shared.
If you’ve made a real difference in someone’s life, you don’t need to “keep” them to validate your impact.
Their success—whether with you or beyond you—is the proof of the seeds you planted.
That’s the real legacy of leadership.
