🏡 **Should You Borrow From Your 401(k) to Buy a House?**

I see this all the time. A buyer finds the right house but needs more money for the down payment. Then comes the question:

**“Should I take money out of my 401(k)?”**

Before you do, understand the BIG difference between **withdrawing** and **borrowing** from your 401(k).

💰 **Withdraw it:** You could owe income taxes + early-withdrawal penalties, and that money loses decades of potential growth.

🔄 **Borrow it:** If your plan allows it, you repay the money — and the interest generally goes back into your own retirement account. There are still risks, but it may be worth comparing before making a withdrawal.

Here’s the number that surprises people:

**$40,000 left invested for 25 years at a hypothetical 8% average return could grow to about $274,000.**

So taking $40,000 out today could potentially cost you much more than $40,000 long term.

Sometimes using 401(k) money can help you buy a home. But a bigger down payment isn't automatically the smartest choice.
