Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara is kicking off his planned overhaul of California’s insurance market rules this year with a hearing next month on streamlining approvals for requested rate increases, one of several key demands from insurers who have been bailing on homeowners or cancelling policies across the state.

Lara last fall announced sweeping changes to the state’s insurance regulations as homeowners in wildfire-stricken California struggled with skyrocketing premiums and canceled policies. The commissioner’s office is seeking public comment on the proposed regulatory changes ahead of a planned public hearing March 26.
