In competitive, multiple offer situations, some buyers accompany their offer with a personal pitch letter crafted to persuade a seller to chose their offer over that of another. We advise sellers and buyers against them. For one, emotions cloud negotiations. More seriously, love letters could open a seller to accusations of discrimination.

This week, the National Association of REALTORS® BOD approved a revision to the code of ethics stating that members must not "engage in conduct and speech that is discriminatory and abhorrent" whether or not such behavior is tied to a real estate transaction. In other words, be a professional at all times, not just when you're on the job. Kudos to the association and NAR's new president, Charlie Oppler, for strong words and concrete action.
