Something rises out of the ashes

During excavation for One World Trade Center in 2010, a historic shipwreck was found 22 feet below street level.

Tree-ring dating revealed the ship was built around 1773, using wood from Pennsylvania, suggesting origins near Philadelphia.

The 32-foot vessel was likely a cargo ship, possibly used for trade along the East Coast before being abandoned.

Experts believe it may have been sunk intentionally as landfill to expand Manhattan’s shoreline in the early 19th century.

Artifacts like nails, iron fastenings, and animal remains were also found near the wreck, offering clues about life in colonial America.
