🚨 SCAM ALERT FOR HOMEOWNERS AND CONTRACTORS 🚨

A new scam is targeting vacant or unoccupied homes listed for sale.

A scammer poses as the property owner and hires a contractor to perform work without the actual homeowner’s knowledge or permission. After the work is completed, the scammer requests the contractor’s banking information or sends a fraudulent Zelle, PayPal, or Venmo link designed to steal personal or financial information.

Contractors:

Verify the identity of the property owner before entering the property or beginning work.
If the property is listed for sale, contact the listing brokerage using independently verified contact information.
Do not trust contact information or payment links provided by the person requesting the work.
Never provide banking information or click an unfamiliar payment link.

Homeowners with vacant or unoccupied properties:

Ask your real estate broker to check the property regularly.
Watch for unexpected work, materials, contractors, or signs of entry.
Notify your broker immediately about any suspicious activity.

This scam can expose homeowners to property damage, insurance claims, lawsuits arising from injuries, potential mechanic’s liens, and other serious legal and financial consequences.
