The concept of ‘Moneyball’ was developed and made famous by Billy Beane and the Oakland A’s in 2001. This is the process by which statistics are analyzed on a mass scale, giving one the ability to make future determinations based on a series of specific information buried deep in the data.

In Baseball, they coined this cutting edge process ‘Sabermetrics’. But from our vantage point it felt a more like any given Tuesday. Years before Beane an Co. took the league by storm with their data forward approach, we’d been evaluating investments using key metrics and seeing a lot of profit.

For true investors, there is no such thing as regret. There are only lessons. In Poker they say that you only learn when you lose. Over the past 30 years we’ve been able to avoid any truly bad beats, but we’ve certainly taken our knocks and are that much better for it.

We would never want to change the past, because it’s made us who we are. But if there was one thing we would go back and rewrite, it would be to seek the advice of those who had done it before.

Like so many issues in today’s society, the issue of government mandated Rent Control comes in many shades of grey. Of course no tenants want to see rents raised astronomically. But the other side of the coin is that these regulations create deep ripples throughout the industry, and in the long run actually force landlords to raise their prices.

But don’t take our word for it. Take a look at the rental markets in New York, San Francisco, DC, and LA. All of these cities have rent control, and all of the cities have prices that are out of control.

The notion is admirable, but it’s not a winning strategy. The results are not having the desired effect on renters, While at the same time, it’s putting the squeeze on landlords.

Renowned author Malcom Gladwell claims that it takes 10,000 hours with a subject to master it. After coming across this photo in the archives, we were wondering if those hours counted while you were asleep?

But whether or not you include time dreaming amongst blueprints, our founder Eduardo Sigal bypassed that milestone a long time ago. He was born into a Real Estate family and clearly has not strayed far from the nest.
