This is why I started K‑9 Mold Detection NWF.

I have never publicly shared our full story like this.

For years, I have carried so much embarrassment over what happened to us. Losing the ability to be the person I once was is a feeling I cannot fully explain.

We lost everything we owned.
We lost our home.
We lost our health.
Then I lost my career and our health insurance—all while our health continued to decline.

After 17 years of building a successful career, I believe I was wrongfully terminated by Align Technology—the Fortune 500 company behind Invisalign—while I was on approved ADA medical leave.

The disability insurance benefits provided through my employer stopped after my first payment. New York Life even documented that a denial letter had been sent in error, yet the decision was never corrected.

I begged both companies to help us.

Nobody cared.

Even after rebuilding our lives once, I found myself in another devastating financial spiral. I lost the career I had worked my entire adult life to build—and everything I had worked so hard to provide for my daughter.

Then came the legal nightmare.

For five years, the attorneys I trusted failed to properly present critical evidence, prepare our case for trial, or retain the expert witnesses needed to prove what happened to us. While our lives continued falling apart, the clock kept running.

Now, the statute of limitations has expired.

And somehow, it gets even more unbelievable.

The homeowners’ insurance company remained hidden behind the homeowners’ attorneys for years. Now, after allowing this claim to sit unresolved, they are attempting to collect approximately $17,000 in court costs from me—even though the insurance company is not listed as a party in the case.

The matter is still sitting in Walton County, waiting for a judge to decide whether I must pay the homeowner—and the insurance company that has been operating behind the scenes.

The very people and companies I hold responsible for taking so much from us now want me to pay them.

They cost us our health, our belongings, our financial security, and hundreds of thousands of dollars. They took away my ability to be the mother I had always been and the mother my daughter deserved.

And now they want money from me.

How FU**ED up is that?

Sometimes I still think, “This cannot be real.” This nightmare is so outrageous that it sounds impossible to fabricate.

But this is our reality.

In 2018, my daughter and I moved to the beach believing we were beginning one of the happiest chapters of our lives. We were healthy, vibrant, and excited. We celebrated our new home, my new career territory, and everything we believed was ahead of us.

Then we discovered visible mold inside the ductwork.

That discovery marked the beginning of a devastating decline in our health—and a journey that changed our lives forever.

This is not just a story about mold.

This is the reason I created K‑9 Mold Detection NWF. It is why Raven and I now help families search for what may be hidden inside their homes.

I cannot change what happened to us.

But I can use everything we survived to help protect another family before they lose their health, their belongings, their financial security, or the life they once knew.

For the first time, I am sharing our story.

It’s time to stop dismissing people—and start paying attention to their environments.

The CDC confirms that damp, mold-contaminated buildings are associated with respiratory symptoms and infections, worsening asthma, allergic rhinitis, eczema, and hypersensitivity pneumonitis. People with weakened immune systems or chronic lung disease can develop serious—and sometimes fatal—invasive mold infections. CDC/NIOSH⁠

Some molds also produce mycotoxins. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies naturally occurring aflatoxins as Group 1 carcinogens and ochratoxin A and fumonisin B1 as Group 2B—possibly carcinogenic to humans. These classifications primarily concern exposure through contaminated food, so they should not be misrepresented as proof that ordinary household mold exposure causes cancer. IARC classifications⁠

Yes, mold spores naturally exist in our environment—but active mold growth inside a building indicates a moisture problem that must be addressed. “Everyone has mold” is not an excuse to ignore indoor mold growth. EPA mold guidance⁠

Please stop ignoring your environment, your symptoms, your children’s symptoms, and changes in your pets’ health. Listen to your body, speak with a qualified medical professional, and investigate whether moisture or mold may be present in your home.

Mold exposure does not always look like a mold problem.
