The country is falling apart. The public widely mistrusts its ineffective current leadership and many disdain the very idea of government. World-wide Inflation has hit especially hard here. Many believe that the country’s reputation and power are terminally shrinking.
The most strident candidate for president has been hanging around the corridors of power decades. As the current election approaches, his actions have landed him in political and legal straights. He has been in court over 140 times, trying to fend off accusations of insurrection, treason, and encouraging violence by his followers. He even appeared in court to defend the “patriots” accused of a government coup.
After losing his prior election by over six million votes, he used the courts to try to overturn the election by claiming voter fraud, election irregularities, and conspiracies. Few judges overlooked his decades-long legal and ethical transgressions, though a few politically aligned ones treated him sympathetically. Despite numerous trials and convictions, his popularity –and coffers—grow with each court appearance.
Now he woos the public in massive rallies. He identifies the will of the people with his person. He champions his ability to fix the economy in a way that none of his predecessors, in fact nobody at all, could. He combines hyperbolic claims with abortion politics. He smears his opponents and offers a “platform” of ultranationalism fueled by antisemitism and anti-communism/anti-socialism. He proclaims that the constitution protects his political speech, no matter how inflammatory or untrue. He publicly excoriates his opponents as mouthpieces for the elite and powerful. He threatens them with mayhem by his followers. He brags about his intention to become a dictator if he should win the presidency by what he insists are “democratic” means.
But the means are not really democratic. Backed by hard core fanatics, the candidate has taken control of his party. He knows that he need not win a majority to achieve legal command of government because of his strong hold on party mechanisms, biases in the electoral system, and the disarray of his opponents.
The candidate: Adolf Hi**er in Germany,1923 to 1933; the party: N***s.
