Did you know the iconic banyan trees in Southwest Florida aren’t native?
In 1925, Thomas Edison planted a banyan sapling in Fort Myers while experimenting with plants that could produce rubber. That tiny tree grew into the largest banyan in the continental U.S. and inspired many of the banyans we see across the region today.
But their story goes even deeper…
In Eastern traditions, banyan trees symbolize immortality, resilience, and wisdom—because their roots keep growing outward, creating entire forests from a single tree.
A beautiful reminder that strong foundations can grow into something extraordinary.
