Robinson's Preserve in Bradenton, Florida is Open!

While we hope that everything is open soon (as long as it's safe), we were so happy to find recently that Robinson's Preserve in northwest Bradenton near Anna Maria Island is still open during these trying times (except for the restrooms). The preserve was developed many years ago from farmland into a coastal wetland habitat area. There are over 600 acres and it continues to expand. There is something to do for the entire family. There are hiking trails that lead to a 53 foot tall viewing tower overlooking Tampa Bay and the Sunshine Skyway. There are also biking trails along the water. You'll find picnic tables and kayak storage along with clean restroom facilities. There is also a 120 year old Valentine House that was moved onto the property by boat and restored and serves as a Welcome Center.

Our favorite is kayaking. You can put in your kayak, canoe or paddle board in a sandy area right near the parking lot. We paddle through mangroves, under walking and biking bridges past the viewing tower and out into Tampa Bay. We see mullet jumping along with a variety of water birds such as crowned night heron, great white egret, white ibis, great blue heron, little blue heron, osprey and more! Once we saw dolphins schooling fish right near us once we were in the Bay. There are often notices of nesting eagles in the preserve.

Santa's coming to Lakewood Ranch!

Santa has arranged his schedule to visit Main Street at Lakewood Ranch every week-end until Christmas!

You'll find him at Macallisters Restaurant on Saturday, Dec. 9 from noon to 3:00. For reservations call 941-359-2424.

On Sunday, Dec. 10 he'll be at Ed's Tavern from 9 to 11 a.m. enjoying breakfast. Reservations can be made at 941-907-0400.

The next week-end find him at the Polo Grill on Sat., Dec. 16 from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. Call 941-782-0899 to make arrangements to enjoy breakfast with Santa.

Find a piece of "Old Florida" at Snook Haven in Venice, FL

Gators floating by, boat rides, live music and great food - you'll find it all at Snook Haven in Venice, Florida. This little piece of old Florida is tucked off the main road just west of I-75 and North River Road. At the first stoplight off the I-75 exit you'll find a dirt road to the south leading past private homes and an RV campground. The restaurant is found on the banks of the Myakka River and is open from 11:30 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. in "season". You can dine both inside and out from a menu of smoked meats including ribs, brisket and pulled pork along with fish and shrimp, burgers, salads and hot dogs. They also feature over 30 beer brands!

The site was used in films all the way back to the 1930's, changed ownership several times in the 60's and 70's and was open to the public in 1988 as a fishing camp with boat ramp. You can reserve a boat ride down the river from Logan River Tours, rent a canoe or kayak or launch one of your own. The current owners also own nearby Sharky's on the Pier on Venice Island. Live music is found daily during the winter and the Gulf Coast Banjos play every Thursday from 11:00 - 1:30. I brought my father to hear them one Thursday and it was a treat as he once was a banjo player himself. Unfortunately pets are not allowed but motorcycles are! Marie Selby Botanical Gardens & Mote Marine Aquarium - Sarasota, FL

September is the month in our part of Florida that we see many specials. The summer crowds have thinned out and the snowbirds have yet to arrive. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens and Mote Marine Labs & Aquarium have joined up for the September "specials". Members of either attraction get can into the other for free. If you are not currently a member of either, you can join one and get into the other for free for the entire month. In addition to the beautiful gardens at Selby's, both inside and out, they will open a special exhibit on Sept. 1 called "Selby's Secret Garden" featuring artists' botanical illustrations from the 17th & 18th centuries. Mote Marine is also featuring $6 Saturdays in September for Florida residents for up to 4 people in the party. Proof of residency is required for at least one person in the party.
