WHATS THE WORST PART ABOUT LIVING IN A SMALL TOWN?

BEFORE SARATOGA WAS SARATOGA 💅🏻
The land was sacred to the Mohawk and Iroquois peoples, who called it Kayaderosseras. They believed the carbonated mineral waters had healing powers and spiritual significance.

By the early to mid 1800s, Saratoga became a national health resort destination. Doctors prescribed trips here for everything from rheumatism to diabetes (whether it worked or not). Wealthy elites like the Vanderbilts and J.P. Morgan, flocked here.

In the early 1900’s, private companies began over-pumping the springs to sell bottled water and gas. This started drying up other springs across the city. A major lawsuit proved all the springs were connected underground. In 1909, New York State stepped in and created the Saratoga Reservation to protect the springs. This is one of the earliest conservation efforts in the U.S. tied to natural resources.

During the Great Depression, federal funding helped build the bathhouses, Hall of Springs and the Gideon Putnam Hotel (1935). The park was designed as a health resort for the public, not just the wealthy.
