This week in our Domestic Violence Awareness Month series, meet Ana.

Anna was asked to leave her home late one night. She had nowhere to go. To give her children some stability, she made the hardest choice of her life and left them behind in the home they knew.

She still saw them every day. She drove them to school and picked them up. But every goodbye got harder. Then she saw it in their eyes: what had been happening to her was now happening to them.

When Anna was about to end up on the street with her son, she called Dr. Karen Alston of 4 the Jewel N U Global, Inc. Within two days, Dr. Karen found her a safe place to stay. Anna came to Union Mission’s Magdalene House, and her son never left her side.

It’s been two years. Anna says healing doesn’t happen in three months or six. Today she has a three-bedroom apartment where all her kids live with her. “We have peace. We are safe. I can provide for them.”

Last night, our community gathered in Forsyth Park to honor the 155 Georgians who lost their lives to domestic violence last year. Survivors shared their stories, and every name was read aloud.

Thank you to SAFE Shelter, Center for Domestic Violence Services, Inc. for hosting, and to Dr. Karen Alston of 4 the Jewel N U Global, Inc for standing with them. Many of the women we serve at Parker's House are survivors themselves, so moments like this matter to us. Here's to the day a vigil like this is no longer needed.

Dozens gathered at Forsyth Park for a vigil honoring victims of domestic violence.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Every week this month, we're sharing the story of a woman who found safety and a new start through Parker's House.

This week, meet Amanda.

For 11 years, she tried to be a good wife. She kept trying even as the anger grew. When her life and her parents' lives were threatened, she knew she had to get out. A friend asked her a simple question: "If there was a way, would you get out?" Amanda said yes. She just didn't know a way existed.

That friend connected her with Dr. Karen Alston of 4 the Jewel N U Global, Inc. Dr. Karen got Amanda to a safe place and made sure her parents were protected too. Through Parker's House and Dr. Karen's classes, Amanda learned to love herself again, set boundaries and say no.

Her message to anyone still in it: "Stop believing it's your fault. It's not."

Our team spent Wednesday at the 24th annual St. Joseph’s/Candler SmartWomen Luncheon & Expo, and we left so inspired!

Every dollar raised goes to the Telfair Mammography Fund, which helps uninsured and underinsured women in our region get mammograms and breast care. Many of the women we walk alongside at Union Mission know how hard it can be to get that kind of care.

Thank you, St. Joseph’s/Candler, for making sure no woman has to go without. And thank you to every survivor on that wall for reminding us what strength looks like.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and we're honored to share Stella Harrell's story.

Domestic violence has shaped Stella's life since she was a baby. Years later, she found herself in an abusive relationship of her own. When she finally left, she came to Parker's House, unsure of what a shelter would be like.

During her 90 days with us, Stella took empowerment classes with Dr. Karen Alston of 4 the Jewel N U Global, Inc and started picturing a future she could build. On her 90th day, she moved into an apartment of her own.

Stella said it best: "I actually have people around me who care about me."

Thank you, Stella, for your courage. And thank you to Emma Hamilton at WJCL News for telling her story with such care.

We hope you'll join us for our Empty Bowl fundraiser on Sunday, November 1, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Reynolds Square in downtown Savannah.

This mission-driven ceramic arts show and tasting will feature soups prepared by Union Mission's culinary team, additional bites from our culinary partners The Olde Pink House and Collins Quarter, and music by harpist Kristen King. Each guest will select a handcrafted bowl and branded tote to take home as a reminder of our community's compassion and care.

Following the event, guests are invited to an optional tour of our new Resource Center at 127 Fahm Street. The tour begins at 1:30 p.m., and parking will be available.

Proceeds benefit Union Mission's new Emmaus House Resource Center, which serves more than 200 individuals each day with meals, medical care, counseling and case management, workforce development, dignity services, and housing navigation, all in one location.

Tickets and sponsorships are available now at EmptyBowl2026.givesmart.com. Thank you for helping us make this meaningful event a success.
