Overlooking Forsyth Park, Magnolia Hall has been part of Savannah’s story for nearly 150 years and has a remarkable literary story of its own.

Built in 1878 for cotton dealer Jacob Guerard Heyward, the stately Second Empire-style residence is instantly recognizable for its mansard roof and elegant double galleries facing the park.

But the people who passed through its doors are every bit as interesting as its architecture. After the Heyward era, Magnolia Hall became a boarding house, and in 1889, future Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Conrad Aiken was born here. More than a century later, author John Berendt also called Magnolia Hall home for a time while writing the book that would become forever intertwined with Savannah: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Today, Magnolia Hall continues its story as an exclusive guest house for SCAD.

From cotton-era Savannah to Pulitzer Prize-winning poetry and one of the most famous books ever written about the city, this is one Savannah home whose walls have quite a story to tell.
