How cool is this?

Maybe you have never met a refrigerator that looked like a church, but you have now.

The Bleak Hall Ice House was built on Edisto Island, SC some time during the mid part of the 1800's by owner John Townsend. It was one of many outbuildings on a very large estate which no longer exists.

For whatever reason, however, the little Gothic icebox is still going strong. It sheltered a very deep pit inside, which was built to receive massive blocks of ice that were cut from frozen lakes and rivers in New England and shipped to South Carolina on tall ships.

Once unloaded, the ice was placed into the pit and insulated with sawdust, then covered with burlap. The resulting chill lasted for months before the ice needed to be replaced, keeping everything within the little structure safely below room temp.

We can't live without our stainless side-by-sides these days, but I've never met one of them that can hang with this little beauty. She's easily 160 years old:-)
