Every ♥ Beat ♥ Counts!
Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death in Oklahoma, and for women nationwide? It's a stark reality, but you have the power to change it. Your heart, and those who love you, are counting on you.
You don’t need a complete lifestyle overhaul to make a real difference. Small, consistent choices add up to big heart health wins. Imagine swapping that sugary drink for ice cold water, taking a brisk walk during your lunch break, or simply understanding your blood pressure numbers. You can do this!
Empower Yourself with Knowledge: Know Your Numbers, Know Your Risks.
Know Your Numbers 🔢:
Get regular checkups. Early detection is key. ✅
Understand your blood pressure. Normal is 120/80 mmHg or lower. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, starts at 130-139/80-89 mmHg.
Consider a Self-Measured Blood Pressure (SMBP) monitoring program. Talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or insurance provider about options near you. Take control of your health!
Cholesterol matters: LDL ("bad") cholesterol should be low, and HDL ("good") cholesterol should be high. Your healthcare provider can test your levels. An active, healthy lifestyle can help manage cholesterol.
Know Your Risk Factors 📈:
Family history, smoking, diabetes, and obesity all increase your risk of heart disease.
Knowing your personal risk factors allows you to make informed decisions.
Every Step Counts ♥: Move More, Live More.
Physical Activity: Every step, kick, move, or swing matters!
Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, plus two days of muscle-strengthening exercises.
Find activities you enjoy and make them a regular part of your routine.
Healthy Choices:
Make smart food choices. Incorporate more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your diet.
Limit processed foods, sugary drinks, and excessive salt intake.
If you smoke, quit. There are resources available to help.
For Women:
Heart disease presents differently in women. Be aware of symptoms like shortness of breath, nausea, and back or jaw pain.
Prioritize self-care and stress management.
