Buying a home can seem like a pipe-dream if you're not financially ready, and your credit, or 'FICO' score as the banks like to call it, is one of the first things lenders look at to determine who gets qualified for a home loan. The last few years have been tricky to get ahead and many of us (including myself) had to lean on credit cards to get by. Luckily, there are a ton of easy ways to brighten up that score and I'm here to dish it out... 📈

How is your credit score determined you ask?

Payment history (35%)
Credit usage (30%)
Age of credit accounts (15%)
Credit mix (10%)
New credit inquiries (10%)

Sooo... how can you quickly improve your credit score?

1. Check your credit score to see why it is low. (Credit Karma is free and takes about an afternoon’s worth of fiddling to get situated) Keep up with it, checking often.
2. Pay down your revolving credit as much as possible to lower your credit utilization percentage. (Skip drinks with friends and date nights out for a few months and throw it at that debt! I promise you will thank me later.)
3.Have inaccurate things removed (especially late payments, it only takes a few annoying phone calls, but worth it.)
4. Be added as an authorized user to an old account with perfect payment history, ideally with a low utilization rate. Ideally, this is done by a friend or relative, and they do not even have to give you the card. You can also pay certain credit repair services that will broker a deal between you and a stranger to do this.
5. Avoid late payments AT ALL COSTS. (Set up that auto pay, whatever it takes boo.)
6. Keep old accounts open, even if you're not using them actively.
