Oh My! Territorial Cup, A Kidnapping, Oldest Football Trophy!
The oldest college football rivalry trophy is the Territorial Cup as certified by the NCAA (Arizona Territory became a State in 1913) and was first awarded in 1899) while still a "Territory". The now annual Duel in the Desert serves as a diversion from taxes, politics and our jobs. That 1899 date for the Territorial Cup trophy puts its birth well ahead of both the Michigan-Minnesota Little Brown Jug (1903) and the Indiana-Purdue Old Oaken Bucket (1925). A bit of history on the rivalry's origination of the uncivilities in addition to the hijinks, pranks and one ups follows. We are not talking about just painting each other's "A" Mountains with a heavy guard. This goes deep and involves a "kidnapping".
