Tom Mix died in a car accident on October 12, 1940, while driving along what is now Arizona State Route 79, about 17 miles south of Florence.

He was behind the wheel of his 1937 Cord 812 convertible, reportedly speeding when he came upon a washed-out bridge or construction barricade. In an attempt to avoid it, he swerved off the road and lost control, crashing into a dry wash (Arroyo Grande).

Ironically, Tom Mix wasn't killed by the impact of the crash itself. He likely would have survived—but a large metal suitcase (or aluminum trunk) from the back seat flew forward during the crash and struck him in the back of the head, causing a fatal injury. He was just 60 years old.

Today, a memorial with a silhouette of his horse, Tony the Wonder Horse, marks the site. It stands as a tribute to a man who starred in nearly 300 silent films and helped define the Hollywood cowboy image.
