“Three Amigos”- Exploring outside the nest is called “Branching”. In Arizona we call it “Walking the Thorny Tightrope!”

In a nest of 3 Owlets, the strongest chick usually eats between 70-90% of the food brought by mom and dad. It’s Mother Nature’s way of increasing the odds of at least one successful fledgling. You can see even the runt of these triplets caught up fast, though.

The Owlet on the left fledged the nest the day this photo was taken with those beautiful flight feathers.

There’s plenty of food for the Great Horned Owls of the Sonoran Desert to grow as an apex predator. In fact, I’ve been photographing their parent’s nest since 2016!

If it swims like a duck, then it must be a… Bald Eagle!?! I can’t say I’ve seen an Eagle float / swim the swift river until this day!🤯

The Arizona Desert Eagle grabbed a Carp larger / heavier than its body right in front of me, and was too stubborn to let go. She was so weighted down that she had to run the Lower Salt River rapids until she could pull her catch to shore! (Photo of the Eagle and the Carp in the comments…)

I sure wish I had my heavy lens with me, but was still able to capture her reeling in more than her weight in fish fat!

A fisherman spotted her just east of the Faralon Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so badly off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her…. a very dangerous proposition. One slap of the tail could kill a rescuer.

They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, nudged them, and pushed gently, thanking them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives.
The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth says her eye was following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.

May you be so fortunate to be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from the things that are binding you.
