Where would I actually spend the money when designing a custom home?
Not everywhere.

I would rather invest in a handful of details that you see, touch and experience every single day.

For this kitchen, that meant creating sculptural island legs so the island feels more like furniture, adding a custom Venetian plaster hood for subtle texture, selecting beautiful stone, and using architectural plumbing fixtures from the Kohler Frank Lloyd Wright collection through Ferguson.

Those details may seem small individually, but together they’re what give a home its point of view.

I’ll keep sharing more of the details I think are worth investing in — and the places where I think you can save. 🤍

It’s the details you almost miss.
This space was designed around a few elements that deserved to stand on their own — from the sculptural work by Justin Beller, to the custom cabinetry, to that incredible blue-green natural stone wrapping the fireplace.

One of our favorite details is the cabinetry tucked alongside the fireplace. Rather than treating it as simple storage, we designed it to feel architectural — glass-front uppers, beautifully proportioned drawers, minimal hardware, and a stone surface that visually connects back to the fireplace.

And the stone? Definitely one of the splurges in this home. Natural stone at this level can become one of the larger material investments in a room once you account for slab selection, fabrication, vein placement and installation — but it’s also the element that makes the entire space.

The sculptural piece by Justin Beller brings in something completely different: color, geometry and texture against an otherwise quiet palette.

As a Home Depot Creator, we love showing that great design isn’t about everything coming from one place or being expensive. It’s about knowing where to invest, where to simplify, and how to bring all of those pieces together.

Luxury is in the edit.

It’s what happens before the tile goes up that makes the difference. Tile walk + shower prep today. 🔨

Well… this was an accident. 😂

I’m over at Arizona Tile approving slabs for one of our kitchens, and I realized I accidentally selected marble instead of porcelain.

The problem? I’m kind of in love with the marble now. 😍

So now I need your help…

Do I keep the marble or go back to the porcelain?
What would you choose? 👇 Let me know in the comments.

From hard hats to blazers... and back again tomorrow. 😂

Turns out I do own clothes that aren’t covered in drywall dust.

Most days I’m walking active job sites, reviewing details with our trades, solving construction challenges, and making sure every finish comes together exactly as planned.

Every once in a while it’s fun to clean up—but if I’m honest, I’m happiest in kicks and ALO skirts with a tape measure in hand.

Tomorrow it’s back to the job site.

What’s your daily work uniform? 👇

Before you replace an old wood door… watch what happens when you bring it back to life. 👀

Today we’re restoring this original red oak front door instead of replacing it. After hours of sanding, we’re finally at the fun part—testing stain colors with our finish craftsman to find the perfect tone before we lock it in.

It’s amazing how the right stain can completely transform the character of a home while preserving the craftsmanship that’s already there.

Sometimes the best luxury upgrade isn’t buying new—it’s restoring what’s worth keeping.

Have you ever refinished an old wood door instead of replacing it? Which stain would you choose?

Travel is one of the greatest investments you can make as a designer.

Every destination teaches you something—from architecture and materials to landscape design and how a space makes people feel. Riding through Costa Palmas was a reminder that timeless design is quiet, intentional, and deeply connected to its surroundings.

This is the kind of inspiration we bring back to every project.

Every project starts with listening to our clients.

But some of our best ideas come from stepping away from the job site and experiencing exceptional hospitality, architecture, and craftsmanship firsthand.

This week we’re at Four Seasons Costa Palmas, meeting with clients while studying how one of the world’s leading luxury resorts creates spaces that feel calm, timeless, and effortless.

We’re paying attention to:
• Material transitions
• Indoor-outdoor living
• Lighting
• Landscape integration
• Scale and proportion
• Furniture placement
• The small details guests remember without even realizing it

Great design isn’t about copying what you see.

It’s about understanding why a space feels so good—and bringing that thinking home for our clients.

What detail do you notice first when you walk into a luxury hotel?

The difference between a luxury remodel and an average remodel usually isn’t the expensive finishes… it’s the planning.

Take this powder bathroom.

Most people would finish this tile with a Schluter edge or metal trim. There’s nothing wrong with that—but for this project, we wanted a completely seamless, monolithic look.

That meant making the decision before drywall was even installed.

We furred the wall out so our tile installer could miter the stone back into the drywall, eliminating the need for any exposed trim.

That’s the power of having the designer (mua) and builder (mua) working together from the very beginning. One small decision during framing creates a finish that looks intentional and timeless.

Another behind-the-scenes detail that keeps projects moving? We source our drywall through The Home Depot, and having materials delivered directly to the jobsite saves our crews valuable time and keeps the schedule on track.

The beautiful spaces everyone sees are built on hundreds of decisions that most people never notice.

Would you have noticed this detail?

Luxury isn’t about spending more…it’s about getting the details right.

Before the electrician installs anything permanently, we’re laying out the dining room to make sure the pendants are perfectly centered with the window, aligned with the table, provide comfortable clearance, and feel balanced from every angle.

These are the details that are difficult—and expensive—to fix later, which is why design and construction should always work hand in hand.

Thanks to for helping keep our projects moving with the tools and materials we rely on every day.
