I recently had a very successful client ask me how the federal reserve affects interest rates- Fair question. Many think the fed "Sets" the interest rate. This isn't actually true so I thought I would help people understand so read on if you are interested-

Basically...The Fed sets the rate they lend to banks called the "Fed Funds Rate"- The Fed was established by the 1913 Federal Reserve Act to set and oversee US monetary policy to stabilize the economy. It consists of 12 regional banks and 24 branches, and it’s run by a board of governors who are voting members of the Federal Open Market Committee. The FOMC sets the benchmark interest rate at which BANKS BORROW, and in turn, it affects the rate Banks lend out their money.
