THROUGH A DESIGNER’S EYE | NATURAL LIGHT

One of the first things I notice when I walk into a home is something you can’t select from a finish book: natural light.

After 40 years as an interior designer, I’ve learned to look beyond how bright a room feels during a showing.

I notice the size and placement of the windows, the direction the home faces, how light moves from one space to another, and how it interacts with the architecture, finishes, and views.

In Arizona, this is especially important. The right natural light can make a home feel warm, open, and beautifully connected to the desert landscape. But exposure also affects how a room feels at different times of day.

When touring a home, I encourage buyers to ask:

How will this room feel in the morning versus late afternoon?
Where does the strongest sun enter the home?
Do the windows frame the views you want to enjoy?
Are the main living spaces bright without sacrificing comfort and privacy?

Beautiful finishes can be changed.

The way a home captures light is much harder to recreate.

It’s one of the reasons I believe looking at a home through a designer’s eye can reveal so much more than what you see at first glance.
