A monsoon is a seasonal shift in wind patterns that brings a period of increased moisture, thunderstorms, heavy rain, strong winds, dust storms, and lightning.
In Arizona, the monsoon season officially runs from June 15 through September 30. During this time, moisture from the Gulf of California, Gulf of Mexico, and Pacific Ocean moves into the Southwest, creating the conditions for afternoon and evening storms.
Common Arizona monsoon hazards include:
• Heavy rain and flash flooding
• Strong wind gusts that can exceed 50 mph
• Dust storms (haboobs)
• Frequent lightning
• Power outages
• Falling trees and branches
Even though Arizona is a desert, a single monsoon storm can drop significant rainfall in a short period of time, which is why homeowners should prepare their roofs, drainage systems, landscaping, and outdoor furniture before the season begins.
For homeowners, monsoon preparation helps reduce the risk of:
• Roof leaks
• Water intrusion
• Flooding near foundations
• Damaged landscaping
• Broken windows
• Insurance claims from storm damage
Be prepared this season!
