Closing day is exciting… but what you do next really matters.
The first 30 days in your new home are all about starting fresh, staying organized, and protecting your investment long term. Save this so you don’t forget!
1. Do a deep clean. Even if it looks clean, it’s so much easier while the house is empty. Floors, baseboards, cabinets, appliances. Start fresh.
2. Change the locks. You never know who still has a key. This is one of the easiest ways to feel secure from day one.
3. Start a home binder. Keep warranties, manuals, paint colors, appliance info, and trusted contractors in one place. Future you will be grateful.
4. Update your address everywhere. USPS, banks, credit cards, subscriptions, insurance, work, delivery apps. Do it early so nothing gets missed.
5. Label shut-off valves. In an emergency, seconds matter. Make sure everyone knows where water and gas shut-offs are.
6. Replace toilet seats. Small cost. Big peace of mind.
7. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace batteries and check expiration dates. Most units should be replaced every 10 years.
8. Change HVAC and water filters. Protect your systems right away and improve air and water quality.
9. Confirm utilities are fully in your name. Electric, gas, water, trash, internet. Double check everything transferred correctly.
10. Set up a maintenance calendar. Add reminders for HVAC servicing, gutters, filter changes, and seasonal upkeep.
Homeownership doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. A simple plan makes all the difference.
