Great idea, people should definitely be responsible to live with less so that corporations and billionaires can further hoard resources. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for urban density where applicable. And I love living in community with others. But that’s not what this is…

And here’s where I call bu****it. We don’t actually have a housing crisis. That’s a term we use to confuse people. We could house every single person in this country without building anything new. There are plenty of houses and/or buildings that could become housing. They are just cost prohibitive, used as vacation rentals, gate-kept with moralistic red tape, or actually sit vacant because whoever owns them doesn’t need the money.

What we have is an affordability crisis. Because we have a wealth gap and unfettered capitalism crisis.

How about universal basic income and social safety nets like healthcare, education, childcare, paid family leave & social security, and yes, free housing for those who need it. All easily funded TENFOLD by simply adopting equitable taxation.

Problem effing solved. I will die on this hill. Join me, won’t you?
