It is Women's History Month and Rianna is ready to celebrate! Through the coming weeks, we will be highlighting our favorite, extraordinary Seattle and Washington women on Facebook and Instagram!
To kick the month off, we are starting with jazz singer Ernestine Anderson! Born in 1928 and a native Texan, Ernestine's family moved to Seattle in 1944 and she attended Garfield High School. She, along with friends Ray Charles and Quincy Jones, were staples in the era's numerous jazz clubs of the Central District and architects of the burgeoning scene!
Ernestine continued to show love to her adoptive city and the jazz scene by opening a namesake jazz club in Pioneer Square. She passed away in 2016 but her indelible legacy in jazz and Seattle remain! If you want to experience her "honey at dusk" voice, we highly recommend her 1955 recording of "You'll Always be The One I Love" with George “Gigi” Gryce.
Happy listening! 😊
