• More people get scored: It can evaluate thinner credit files (sometimes with just 1 month of history) and incorporate alternative data like rent, utility, or telecom payments. This scores roughly 30+ million extra consumers that classic FICO often leaves unscorable. 
• Often more favorable results for near-miss borrowers: Same credit file can produce a higher score under VantageScore 4.0 because of different weighting, trended data (looking at balance trends over ~24 months), and reduced impact from medical collections or paid collections. This can push someone over a lender’s cutoff or into a better rate tier. 
• Now fully available for conventional mortgages: As of September 2026, all Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac-approved lenders can use VantageScore 4.0 (not just a pilot group). This gives buyers a second scoring option alongside classic FICO on the same loan. 
• Potential cost savings: VantageScore is priced far lower for lenders (~$1 vs. much higher for FICO), which can reduce origination costs that get passed on to buyers.

• Other basics: Must be the borrower’s primary residence; loan amounts must stay within local FHA limits; FHA mortgage insurance is required; work is funded via an escrow account and released as repairs are completed and inspected.
This program is popular with first-time buyers and those looking to improve properties that need work, while keeping the low-down-payment flexibility of standard FHA loans. Requirements and limits can vary slightly by lender, so borrowers should confirm details with an FHA-approved lender.
