When you get a review like this, it starts the week off perfectly!!

"Laura was so amazing through the application process. I was moving from out of state and she was so accommodating and worked with me and my friend in state to make sure I had a clear understanding of where I was trying to move. She was so prompt with all of her communication, and not a word she spoke was a fabrication. If I ever have to move from this place, then I will be asking for her assistance. She is amazing, honest, and trustworthy. "

Two years ago, lawmakers in the Big Sky State passed one of the most comprehensive state-level housing reform packages in the country. This year, they doubled down on their success.

This is unfortunate and has been exacerbated by Seattle's and King County's well-intentioned but flawed housing policies. Don't expect the recently passed rent cap to change anything!

Housing advocates hope the state’s new law limiting rent hikes will help slow the pace

When I read this stuff, I ask "Are King County and Seattle's housing programs working?" We are 5 years since the pandemic -- plenty of time to effect some positive change in housing. My unequivocal answer -- NO! Their policies are flawed.

For example: $10/mo. late fee? Really. Look, we're not trying to "get rich" on late fees. We ARE trying to modify human behavior through some basic psychology called "cause and effect". You do a small bad you get punishment. You do a big bad you get a big punishment.

Banks charge ~5% for a mortgage late because banks know that if they charge $10 for a late fee then no one would pay their mortgage!

Guess what? Since instituting the $10/mo. late fee in 2023, evictions are skyrocketing...hence this notice from the sheriff's office:

In a July 1st email, the King County Sheriff's Office announced a reduction in in-person service hours in order to prioritize processing incoming writs, which have accumulated a backlog due to multiple factors.

Multiple factors. One of those factors: SCREWED UP HOUSING POLICIES ENCOURAGING BAD BEHAVIOR FROM TENANTS WHO LATER GET EVICTED!!

If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for life. If you give a man a fish, he gets evicted!!

Everything was fine till COVID hit. Rents were rising indiscriminately, but evictions kept falling. Then something magical happened. A bunch of free money was handed out, and that changed everything!!

It is amazing how the government's well-intentioned actions always seem to make things worse. Certainly, something needed to be done when COVID hit. But it is pretty obvious from the graph below that the path chosen made it worse for a LOT of people.

For the record, the organization publishing that graph is non-partisan.
