1: get pre-approved know exactly what a lender will approve you for
2: know your budget. What you are you actually able to afford.
3: save that money honey! As a buyer you are usually responsible for paying for the inspection, appraisal, closing costs and very improperly the earnest money. This is money that shows you are able and willing to purchase this home.
4: last but definitely not least boost your credit score. Make on time payments, keep debt low and never EVER open a new line of credit ANYWHERE for any reason once you start working with a lender.
