On the Hiyu passing SBMC over the weekend. Hiyu was originally constructed for Washington State Ferries. Since retiring from the fleet in 2017, she's been used as a floating event space.

USCG Cutter Florence Finch entering the lake last week to participate in law enforcement during Seafair Festival. This is a Sentinel-class cutter, a rare visitor to the lake. With twin 20-cylinder, 5,676hp MTUs, she can cruise at 28-knots, and she has more than 2,500nm range at 15-knots.

Welcome Home, Starr!

Twenty years ago, Don and Sharry Stabbert sailed home to Seattle after cruising Starr to Europe. Passing the old Marco Shipyard, they saw a quiet property with untapped potential and imagined something better: the perfect yacht facility. Freshwater moorage. Docks wide and stable enough to drive a golf cart down. Buildings designed with shop space on the ground floor to service the yachts, offices above for owners and management teams, and caretaker units so crews could call the shore home for a while.

That vision became Salmon Bay Marine Center.

Yesterday, Starr came home again, this time from a loop of the Pacific. Since leaving Hawaii last spring, Don and crew have voyaged to Fiji, on to Japan, and back to Seattle by way of the Aleutians and the Bering Sea, tracing the same waters once fished by boats built at that old Marco yard.

Twenty years later, the vision still holds. SBMC offers Class A office, flex, R&D, and shop space alongside yacht moorage on the Ballard Ship Canal, built for the people and companies who work on and around the water, just as Don and Sharry imagined.

Western Flyer heading towards The Center for Wooden Boats for her final public stop on a tour of the Pacific Northwest. Built in Tacoma in 1937, Western Flyer was made famous by John Steinbeck and Ed Rickets, who took her to the Gulf of California in 1940. Western Flyer was recently fully restored and is once again operating as a working research vessel and floating classroom.
